Ads Now In CS1.6
Apparently, the last update made it so that the voluntary BETA for advertisements in Counter-Strike 1.6 are no long voluntary.
I scoped out Office to see if the ads had made their way into the corporate setting, but they have not. So far, I've only seen them in Dust2 and Aztec. These still seem to be the placeholder ads that were used in the BETA. Meaning, these are all ads for Valve's own games right now, and the "true" ads may be coming along shortly.
By "true" ads, I mean those that are for products that are not created by Valve. Hopefully, they will not look like such a sore thumb on the map walls. Of course, this is all just speculation on my part. The non-Valve ads could also end up being just as "stamped on" as the current ones are.

I think in a very short while, Valve will realize what they've done, and remove them. I can't imagine that they can get away with this.
CURSE YOU, EA!!!
Anyhoo. This is a shame, but eh, we've known stuff like this was coming for awhile. The only real surprise is that they didn't slap this stuff in a couple of years ago back when CS was at it's real height.
Still. Shame they had to go and put them up on my favourite spray icon locations. Or what were my favourite spray icon locations, because lulz, who plays CS now anyway? m i rite?
i m rite.

Promises of reduced prices with Steam, and we get MORE expensive games, which seem to be following a trend of half-finished content. Now we get ads in our overpriced, half-finished games?
Yaaaaay! Kiss my dick you assholes.
Meh, I guess I'll just finish out the CAL season and call it quits if there aren't any fixes released. Of course CAL won't support the fixes while CEVO will, because CAL is CAL.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
And the sad part is all the lackey's who keep playing. There should have been an international boycott the day these rolled out. Get everyone to not log in to Steam at all playing any game until they're removed. But there's about as much chance of that happening as me getting to nail Jessica Alba.
zips is a gernig.
Whats your opinion on this? As a gamer, i find this incredibly ridiculous, and unacceptable. Why does Valve feel the need to just keep destroying the faith of the already shaky support that players have. First they release steam, and it sucks. It _still_ sucks. It's still a buggy POS. Then instead of fixing their already released software, they instead go and do this.
How does this help the relationship between players and companies?
How much more garbage do we, the PAYING CUSTOMERS, the ones who should have all the power, take from idiotic, money-grabbing companies?
I dont know, but until we actually do something about it, my guess is that the trend is going to continute, crap like DWP and ads and all the other pointless, needless "updates" are going to continue.
Yeah the rare times I still play CS, its at a LAN party late at night after most of the ecocking clan losers have lost and went home (thanks for staying and keeping the LAN party jumpin', dickheads; turns out theres more than CS to play) and all that's left is people who wanna remember when CS was fun and we get together and play jeepathon, leetskeets, <insert 20 other nipper maps>, and all that good shit (which lack the Valve ads) so bring the damn ads!
If CS is supposed to be some sorta sport, then its only natural as sports have become to play your rounds of CS on Alltel de_aztec and Bank of America de_dust2 during the All-American Cheeseburger Challenge presented by McDonalds event. Deal with it.
I amuse myself.
A game like 2142 which has ads in it when you buy it is bad enough. I haven't seen those so I don't know how bad they are. But adding them into a game that's been owned by so many people for so long a time and is still consistently played is probably one of the worst business moves I know.
Their karma is dropping like a rock. How they expect to make any money with the kind of karma they're getting from this is beyond me.
...
Of course, this does mean CS1.6 will have had a significant game-specific update more recently than CS:S and DoD:S

......terrible idea
Advertising is a way of life, no matter how shit it makes stuff look. On one level, websites like this NEED advertising to pay the bills, we understand this. On another level, Valve put ads in game to make more money (they are greedy and sold out when they didn't have to).
I no longer see Valve as a reputable games maker and believe they have lost all direction of where their games should be going. Once again a great company has sold out into the shitty watery mainstream that is EA games. Very soon we will have Half-Life 2008, 2009 etc etc. They will milk the franchise down into some scripted pile of junk....
Im REALLY MAD&ANGRY!!!
i played cs since it was 1.3,when it was just like a popular HL mod
And that big corporation suddenly just consumed the poor mod!!
And they are abusing it NOW!!!!!!!!!
Lets remove the ads ,make a patch or something like that
We should just replace couple of maps, few wad. textures and done!
I know this is how ads work. Ads will make me buy things, or inclined to buy things, I don't want to buy. Sure, I'm admitting that I'm weak-willed and feeble-minded, but only because all humans are. It's the reason we even have advertisements. It's the reason AOL is one of the biggest ISPs when they're one of the most worthless ones, because they spend so much on marketing instead of improving the quality of their service, and whenever internet newbies decide they want to get an ISP, the first one they think of is AOL. Even though there's better ISPs out there, the only one they've heard of is AOL, so that's what they get.
It is a proven fact that ads affect you.
So this is why I in general do not watch TV unless a show really catches my eye. (The only show I really watch right now is Heroes.) I generally wait until a TV show is released on DVD before I watch it, and before shows were released like that, I just didn't watch them. I like having an awesome television set, but I use it for console video games, DVDs, and eventually I plan to hook it up as a computer monitor, some of the time, if it turns out it works well as one.
I use Firefox to block ads. I have a virus protection software program that also blocks adware from getting on my computer. I also block spyware so that ads can't become more personalized. I filter spam in my e-mail. I use software that doesn't have any ads in it.
In short, I avoid advertisements when at all possible because they affect my decision-making when it comes time for me to buy a product. And they do so detrimentally; I may not be making the best choice if I just go with what I've heard from the horse's mouth.
In short, I feel the worst thing that can happen is for CS players to just get used to this, because they are just opening themselves up to be brainwashed by Valve. I honestly believe that every CS player should do one of the following things (in order of preference):
-Never buy a product from Valve again.
-Quit playing 1.6 altogether.
-Never look at the scoreboard or play maps with ads on them, ever.
-Hack/cheat the game, either via server or client, to remove the ads.
Players who do not do any of the above are just letting themselves get brain-raped and -washed and just asking for more abuse of the same.
I sure hope Valve realizes that their karma is rock bottom right now. The only way it could get worse is to put ads in all of their games, even HL1 and HL2.
But they won't do it. Like fucking crack-whores looking for a fix. Valve knows they can just take a huge dump in their mouths and they'll just swallow it and say "damn that was good, got any more?".
Boycott, my friends. Petitions don't work. "Open letters to..." don't work. Stop giving them money? Works every fucking time.
While we're at it, you should make a note of every single sponsor you see in game. Sit down and write them an intelligent letter letting them know you will not be buying their products, either.
Once again, these things only work if the majority of people do it. A few of us on soap boxes aren't going to get anything done.
As I said I don't even play 1.6 so I jumped on a server to check it out. The scoreboard and spec menu aren't that bad. If they'd have stopped there I think everything would have been fine. But dust2 looks retarded as hell. Valve should go back and read the description for the game, especially if they used words like "immersive" and "realistic", which I think they did.
Anyhoo...your dollars are all that matter to them. Make them count for something.
So far I mostly see Intel ads with their Intel Extreme cpu.
They can't seem to blend them in nicely, but oh well. It's just going to be a distraction but heh. We should be fine.
but now I'm like
