Ads in Counter-Strike?
Imagine this: You're walking along long A in dust2 heading towards the bombsite as a Terrorist. You take out your AWP and you fire off a shot at the target in your sites. What, you didn't get the kill? Of course you didn't get the kill! You just took out an in-game likeness of Subway's Jared.
Why is Jared in your game of Counter-Strike? Well, according to Gamecloud, there's a new line of in-game advertisements that may start showing up in your favorite online FPS.

You can add Valve's shooter Counter-Strike to the list of games that have gotten in-game advertising. This press release announces the launch of a new in-game ad provide called Engage that has already worked a deal with Subway restaurants to put in in-game ads for specific cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas and Sacramento. While the press release only states that the ads appeared in "the most popular online action game played among men 18 to 34", Gamecloud confirmed with an Engage spokesperson over the phone that the ads appeared in Counter-Strike game sessions. So far as I've seen, there has been no official statement by anyone from Valve about the validity of the appearance of ads in Counter-Strike. I'm awaiting a response back that will either deny or confirm their agreeing to include ads, but in the meantime feel free to voice your (mature) opinion on the matter!

HELL NO. I thought those damn in-game banners were bad enough but Jared would be way too much!!. I believe a boycott is in order .
edit: boycott of servers that use this crap
Anyway, about the topic - I don't like it for the simple reason that it affects the game...
I don't care (I don't like it, but can live with that) having commercials in-between rounds, or when map switch.
But having banners or similiar things poping up in mid game, that is way over the line.
TBH, I doubt that VALVe will do such thing...
anyway, about the advertisements... i wouldn't care about them as long as they aren't too flashy or distracting, like the current banners in d2, they would be fine as long as they are similar to that.
If someone can find one, can you shoot me the IP or name of the server please?
[email protected] works.
Thanks
Erik
that makes me sick.
Anyway, I'm glad this isn't supported by valve.
You have been able to add sprites into maps for years in earlier versions, mainly simply stating a clan's name or something. If you added 2/3 sprites for every map, and simply overwrote them when they needed updating, that would be very similar, except clients already with the sprites will not see the new versions.
It's done by editing the map entities, kinda similar to the way the CPL maps were edited to remove flashbugs, but all it requires is the download of a sprite, as the map is exactly the same.

Even so, I would hate to think we had to put up with ads in our servers. Things like an ad for the server host company, on a branded server (as opposed to unbranded) would be ok, as the Message of the Day is usually ignored. That would be about my limit though..
The article claims gamers are more attentive than TV viewers, which is true, but gamers are probably not attentive to reading some AD splashed in front of them when in a firefight. Still, in those slack times when dead or in freezetime, they would probably be read.
sell out -.-`
at first i thought it was just a spray, but its been there forever...*sigh*
good marketing strat though i'd say
Of course the most popular map in CS history, dust2, has ads on it. But it is somewhat subtle I guess, it's certainly not a large lit up crystal clear subway ad with huge font and bright bulging letters.
I've played plenty of games where I wouldn't mind real ads anymore than the fake ads they replace, but trying to squeeze them into places where ads were never meant to be is just sleezy.
then it's just an amateur move from that company to pay a few local server hosting companies to show those ads .?..
i seriously hope they do not put ads in my cs games.
no one will play. you go to do something and boom ads popups and spray paint bull crap.
as if connecting to a laggy server with html ads wasnt enough as well as stupid spraypaints but now their gonna add this crap?
if this goes into effect then yes that previous post about cs getting competition with bf2 cod2 n such will have new meaning. cs will die, and have no competition because its self will not be a form of competition...
one more reason to play much better games like bf2!
Seriously though, I'd like to make a spray with a giant adaware logo and spray it over those subway ads. Yeah, just my way to rage against the meatball sub.
Worst hosting ever.
